I had a 351W shortblock built some time ago by what I thought to be a reputable shop, now that I am finally getting around to putting on the heads I find that the pistons are sticking out of the block .017 inches. I have considered many options but settled on a thicker head gasket as the most direct and economical solution. Cometic will build an MLS head gasket to any thickness but they cost big $$$, I thought I'd throw this out there to see if anyone has had a similar experience or can recommend a gasket manufacturer that sells a head gasket with at least a .057 compressed thickness. Thanks...
I know a D2 -72 block has the 9.503" deck hieght.
I hear the 71 does also , just haven't seen it myself.
I also understand the pre-71 were a 9.480" hieght.
There's a member on here, BaronVonAutomatc, who has a 69 block with an .080" headgasket. He or some of the other great guys on here might be able to get a line on thick gaskets too for you.
I just got off the phone with Cometic, they are building a set of custom stainless MLS gaskets for me with a .056 compressed thickness. This should bring my piston to head clearance up to .039. Thanks for the input Drac...
