Hi ,
My 1993 Ranger has started to give me trouble shifting into 1st gear it has fairly new fluid (atf) and its full because I just checked the fluid level when I was changing the oil in the engine . I started to notice it last fall but since I don't drive the truck that much in the winter I left it until this spring . It seems to be much better after the truck is driven for a few miles and other than it shifts fine . BTW it's a standard tranny but I'm not sure if it's the Ford type or the Mazda . And it does leak out the seals on the top thats why I keep real close watch on the fluid level and the clutch res. is full and I never have had to fill it . Any thoughts ?
At the top of the tranny, toward the rear are openings for the three shift rails. Those openings are plugged by rubber plugs that age and begin leaking. The solution to the problem is to replace the plugs with new ones, sealed with silicone or with brass plugs.
Thanks ,
If I replace these seals that will stop the leaking of fluid but will this also stop the hard shift problem also ? If not what else do I need to do to fix it . The truck only has 102k and it's a 2.3 so I know there is a lot of miles let before it quits .
Do you know when the trans fluid was last changed? If not, perhaps you should change it. As noted in my signature, I would suggest refilling it with synthetic ATF fluid.
This isn't a complete cure for your problem, but it should make shifting gears easier.
Hi ,
I do almost all of the service on my vehicles and the Ranger had a tranny fluid change about 10k miles ago . I replaced the fluid with Penzoil ATF mercon type . I did read that Royal Purple was the fluid of choice but I had already replaced mine with Penzoil . Is there a specific type that you find that works well ? I like this truck and it's not worked overly hard except when it hauls pellets for the pellet stove in the fall .
I would look for a clutch issue. Hard shifting into first is a symptom of a clutch no quite releasing. I would get the shift rail plugs fixed you can lose a lot of fluid really quick when these start leaking.
Ive got the same symptom..new issue...273K on the tired 3.0...It is bone dry at the b/housing area...seems to be this part...I looked at the blowup of the trans I found on a Ranger forum and it doesnt show these plugs...does anyone know the part number for these ??? I park mine down hill...typically no leaks...parked it uphill last night...sniff...it left its very first puddle of any kind of fluid...
Is this something that can be done in the truck or does the trans need to come out for it to be done right...Im imagining a scenario where you nose the truck down a hill or driveway and pull the cross member and lower the tail down to access them...
Has anyone ever tried this before ??? If so, was it still a pain to do ??? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated...
