My tank is rotting out and I need a new one the warrenty didn't pay for the tank so I said I would replace, Ford wanted $250 just for the tank. I saw a plastic one in jcwhitney for 180, is this good? I did have the sending unit replaced when the truck was in the shop so I know the straps and mounting hardware is good. My main question is do I need any special tools to do this? I have read alot of threads on this subject but none that I saw answered this.
Yes, you need $8-20 worth of fuel line tools, but that's the ONLY special tools needed. Make sure you drain the tank before you start and soak all 8 nuts with Liquid Wrench for a few days prior. If you go to my signature link, and search for my other albums, you can find pics of the gas tank coming out and being opened up. I'll change the link in the next day or so to show all the albums.
If you don't need it now, you will tomorrow, so I'd say get it. You should also get a bottle of Anti-Seize lubricant so you don't need the LW the NEXT time you drop the tank. I use it on everything from lug nuts to exhaust manifold bolts. Every machine-threaded fastener on my truck that I've ever removed is coated with it.
Well I just ordered my new tank so I'll be doing this soon. Thanks for all the advice. Unfortunately it warmed up just enough to melt my driveway and dump seven inches of new snow onto it, sucks not having a garage!
