I found a 71' 4x4 for sale. Ad says it runs good, needs minor work. What engine/trannie combos could be found in the truck? Ad says v8 and 4spd, maybe if it were original, what would have come from the factory? Thanks, Blair

I think that the only V8 engines offered in the '71 4x4 were the 302 small block and the 360 FE big block. Check the VIN to see what it was originally equipped with. The 4th character is the engine code. For '69 models, a "G" indicates a 302 and a "Y" indicates a 360. The 2wd models also had the 390 FE as an option, but I don't think it was available in the 4x4s.
That said, in my experience, it is rare to find one of these old ('72 and older) trucks that still has the original engine. My '69 F100, for instance, originally had a 360 (according to the VIN). When I pulled the motor for a rebuild, I found that it had a 390 in it. What's more common is to have someone claim that the engine is a 390, but when you pull it apart it turns out to be a 360. In any case, if the engine was swapped at some point, and it is a FE big block, there's a decent chance that someone put a 390 in place of the original 360. Heck, it could also be a 428.
I occasionally see some of these older trucks that also have later model engines in them. 460 swaps are not that uncommon. The only way to know for sure is to examine the engine closely. If you don't know how to identify Ford engines, let us know, and we'll give you some things to look for.
I'm no expert on manual trannies, so I can't help you there, but I'm sure some of the other guys can.
As far as trany's go ...it is probably an np435 which has an Aluminumn top plate or a t18 . both will have the xtra low first gear (not Synchro).....T t19 is like the t18 except it has all 4 gears synchronized. all are very strong trany's. fd
Thanks guys. My 79 has a 460 swap. But being a beginner I didn't know what to expect. The only thing I figured I may be right about was maybe a 360. I don't care though, she looks pretty good. It's 2 hours from here, but hope to get a chance to drive her soon. Trying to get owner to take a deposit until I get my money together. Of course what do I want more, more cash saved towards my garage or a 71 4x4. Leaning towards the truck. Later, Blair
