Today I was towing my trailer back home and all of a sudden, what looked to be white smoke was pouring out the exhaust. It ended up being steam and from what I've read on here, it looks like my EGR cooler has bit the dust. I've got a '05 f350 w/ 6.0L, has 112,000 miles, and is completely stock. I haven't worked on a diesel before but worked on everything else I've got. I'm considering doing the egr cooler delete and was wondering what everybodies opinion is on that? How hard is it and how much time should it take? What else should I look at replacing while I have it apart? Is there any good instructions on the internet on how to do it? What are the best kits to work with? Thanks
A lot of times the EGR cooler can fail because of a clogged Oil Cooler so get you a factory Ford Oil Cooler rebuild kit to do while you're down there. Oil Cooler is only accessible once the intake manifold is removed and you'll have it off anyways. Obviously get you the intake manifold gaskets. You'll want to check the EGR valve also to see if it's gummed up. I payed a ford certified master diesel tech to do mine for me (though I had him install a full egr system delete) and it took him approx 7 hours in my driveway.
You can definitely do it, but if you've never done it before I'd leave yourself a weekend or so to do it.
