Ok...I have two problems I cant figure out.... First, My truck will start up fine...then every once in awhile it will die when driving after about 3 miles and could go up to 50 miles before it starts acting like its starvin for fuel. Spit and sputter and it's dead. I wait for about 10-30min and will start again. Sometimes it will run just fine for the rest of a trip and others will go a few miles and die again. Sorry it has a 390 with edlebrock carb. I have replaced new distributer, cap, points, rotor, coil, plugs, fuel filter, fuel pump, carb has been rebuilt, new fan shroud, thought it was a over heating problem and also carb will back fire when on highway so.... Question 2: at idle when I press the gas motor will shake and lug like a locomotive..lol this started happening after the carb rebuild kit was placed.. and timing was done and has died twice on me..... i need HELP!!!
Sounds like the accelerator pump in the carburetor is either not functioning, or the stroke length is too short. It also sounds like the float height could be too low.
I have had similar problems like this off and on for years. The first time it quit I found ear wigs in the fuel filter, the next several times it was a bad ignition circuit splice, and now it looks like the headers are heating the fuel line where it exits the frame rail by the frame horn and is vapor locking my carburetor. I am hoping the fuel line insulation finally cures my problems. We'll see.
In 2005 I was restoring a '73 Cuda. The engine was rebuilt and everything under the hood was brand new. I would drive a few miles and the car would die. The answer was the fuel sending unit in the tank. Over years, the tank accumulated some rust, and after sitting a while, the rust would settle on the bottom of the tank. When you'd start it, it was fine again. But after the pickup tube had been sucking gas for a little while, it got clogged with rust and couldn't pull fuel.
If that's the problem, you'll have to drain and drop your tank, and pull the sending unit. I hope that helps. Cheers.
