Question Murray trans axle ?

What lube is used in an older Murray riding lawn mower with the manual 4 speed transaxle?

Although I was never specifically schooled on which of the many types of grease are appropriate, another technician friend (many, many years at a Cub Cadet/Wheel Horse dealership) told me you can use any general purpose bearing grease in those simple transaxles.
So go get a quart of bearing grease and push it all into the case taking care to get some wiped on all metal-to-metal contact points, close the case back up and you will be good to go.

I used a heavy duty wheel bearing grease in my old Craftsman tractor and never had any problems. Cleaning out the old grease was the worst part.

You got that right.
I've put the split transaxle on the grill at low temp for an hour or so to liquify much of the grease. Then most of it pours out. Have to wear gloves of course. Don't tell my wife.

Well, it is unlikely it is low unless there is a hole in the case.
Those things are sealed and, since they use grease instead of gear lube, there is only an infinitesimal chance the grease could leave the case via the axle seals.
If it is noisy, is is just because it is old and stuff ain't lining up they way it should and/or the old grease is hardened and not re-lubing the gears.
He should drop it, split it, replace the undoubtedly worn bushings and pack it full of fresh grease. That should quiet it down a bit, but the only fix for worn gears is to replace them.
