Load Rating help - D or E - ?

I'm looking at getting some new rubber and possibly rims and not sure if I should only be looking at E's or if D's will suffice.

I have a good deal I can get on a set of BFG All Terrains
<TABLE class=bfgtirespec cellSpacing=0 width="100%"><TBODY><TR><TD>LT315/70R17/D Max Load rating</TD><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD>3195@50
</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Are these going to hold up the Ex or should I pass and look for something else.

Since u have a v-10, not sure of what the stock tire is, but if a deezle, for sure
+1 on e's....
the e's have a stronger sidewall and more load carrying at the proper air pressures for your truck....

Savings or Safety ?!?

I would stay with the E's too. Check out Firestone Transforce AT's.

Take it from me, it's VERY rare to find a 315 tire size with a load range "E" rating. My BFGs are 315/75/16 Ds and have served me so well that I'm on my third set. I've towed up to 8K with them, been off road with them, and ran them on the freeway without a single problem. If you can find a load range "E" in a 315 size, by all means get it. If not, using the load range "D" tires won't hurt...

Nothing wrong with the D rated tires. If you do a lot of towing and offroading you might want to go with the E's but otherwise I think they are overkill. Ds will give you a better ride and I actually prefer the Ds. I have been runnig C truck tires with no proplem but wouldn't recommend them for everyone. I just happened to get a good deal on them.

I just put on some the other day. (4) 305/70r-16 Goodyear Silent Armour Load range E. Cha-Ching!!! $1,400,00

These tires have kevlar sidewalls rated at 3,525 lbs each x 4 = 14,100 lbs total load carrying. Cha-Ching!!!

Love em!

X2 on the Firestone Transforce AT's. Great tire in all weather conditions.

As for the D vs E debate. If you simply must have bigger rubber (like 315's) and don't tow a heavy load then the D's will do just fine. If however you are using the Ex as it was designed for and towing heavy trailers then the E's are a must. My TT weights in at 9,500lbs with a tongue weight of 1,100lbs and I would not use anything but E's!!!

My concern with the D's was the sidewall flex that made for white knuckle driving even withOUT towing - very tiring drive for me....

I think that varies with each tire. The last set of tires I had were Ds but they were actually more planted while towing than the BFG AT/KO Es that are on there now.

If you read the op's statement of 3195 @ 50 psi, I truelly think that the D's will suffice. Plus the bfg's have the triple sidewall, if I'm not mistaken. They should be just fine. I run d's for the summer, and e' on my winter tires, and have not ran into any issues.

Look at the ply rating, 20 years ago all you found on 3/4 ton was D's- but they were 8 ply. Now alot of D's are 6ply and given a D rating at 65psi. E's used to be 10 ply and rated at 50psi. I havent looked at many Es for my trucks in the past as I didn't feel it was right to mortgage the house for tires... And I didn't tow heavy daily, just the occassional 1ton trk on my car trailer.
