Well, it sounds like you are going mainly for fuel mileage and drivability. I guess I would consider how much stuff you have already tracked down for the project. If you are deep into buying stuff or locating stuff then I would stick with it what you already have. If not, it sounds like your best option would be a Cummins/5-speed swap...LOL!! Best of both worlds.....mileage, durability and the ability to tow like crazy!!!!
Not what you had in mind?? I think it would be pretty easy to track down a fuel injected 460 with a ZF5 behind it. With a setup like that, I don't think it would be much worse then running a 351.
I already have a diesel!!LOL! I've thought about the 460 route. I haven't really got into buying my drivetrain parts yet, other than the 390. So, I'm pretty much free to go either way. I know parts for the FE are pricey!
Pat, I would stick with the 390. A 351 just won't give you the performance. Unless you find a Cleveland. There is nothing like having the power when you want it.
Just my two cents.
I have an 87 Ford with a 460/5 Speed. It has a million miles on it, and I think the head gaskets are bad, but you would probably rebuild whatever you are going to put in it anyway. The engine was ran on propane so I would assume that it should be pretty clean inside?? It wouldn't be an EFI engine, but it could be something to start with?? I could also probably get my hands on the same year of truck only with a 351/5 speed, million miles and I think 3rd gear is bad in the tranny. Anyway, just letting you know there are options out there!!!
