Hi... Have an 04, 6.0 with a hard start\no start condition. If we crank on it long enough (after 5 or 6 tries) it will eventually start but runs poorly and won't rev over 2500 rpm, when it does rev to 2500 rpm we can see white smoke from the exhaust.
I've been following a few threads on here about base oil pressure. We did the test to see if the oil filter housing would fill with oil while cranking within 10 to 15 seconds while holding down the spring loaded button in the center of the housing. It does fill within that time frame but the oil drains back out as soon as we stop cranking on it. I guess my question is, is the oil suppose to drain back out of the housing? I did notice that there was no oil in the filter housing when we removed the cap, is this normal? Thanks
There is a thread in the 6.0 tech folder at the beginning of this forum on how to diagnose a hard/no start condition. Yes the oil does drain out of the housing while removing the cap. That was one of the first things I was taught about this motor on an oil change and why it's VERY important to use the correct filter and not a will-fit. That's also why you are supposed to wait for 20 minutes after running the engine to check the oil level. There can be two different motors in an 04. If your truck was produced before 9/23/03 then you have an 03 motor. After is an 04 motor. Another way to tell is to look for the ICP sensor in the passenger side front of the valve cover. That would indicate an 04 motor. Have you scanned it for codes and could we have some more info on your truck? Mileage, oil type, filter type?
The truck belongs to my brother, he's suppose to take it to the dealership today to have them check for codes, check oil and fuel pressure etc. so as soon as I hear from him I will post the findings. I noticed also that while the engine is cranking over there is no activity on the tachometer. I had the same thing happen to my '00 7.3 a year or so ago , it ended up being the crank position sensor. Will the tach on the 6.0 show any activity while cranking over like my 7.3 does? thanks again
NO tach activity, and the chances are very good that it's NOT a crank or cam position sensor. Those were really 7.3 issues that keep carrying over to the 6.0. Those sensors on a 6.0 rarely go bad.
Thanks for the replies guys. He was going to drive the truck to the dealership today but the truck won't crank at all now, going to have it towed in tomorrow.
I've been looking around the site and can't find any info on what component(s) controls the tach, I'm sure there's something here I just haven't found it yet. Just out of curiosity at this point, will someone reading this thread notice the tach the next time you start your 6.0 and see if there is any tach activity while cranking?
Also, he was listening to the fuel pump when he switches the key switch on, says the pump runs for 20 seconds then it stops, Is this normal?
Thanks
Hopefully I'll have more info to pass along after the dealership checks it out
Tach is controlled by PCM or FICM it's in no way manual. It is normal for the fuel pump to run for 20 seconds and shut off if you just turn the key on and don't crank it
