Steering Wheel

Are you using a puller or are you trying to pull it off with your strength? If you are using your strength, get a puller. They are realativly cheap and will come in handy every now and then. Some auto parts stores will even let you "borrow" theirs. I have seen people pull them off by hand, personally I have never been successful.

I got an "infrequent" use puller at NAPA for like 8 bucks. It made short work of it.

I'm sure if I tried it without a puller I would have punched my self in the face and *****.

Use a puller, but be careful. I've been successful in pulling several steering wheels off without damage. However, there have been a few that didn't want to budge at all. I did damage the thread on the steering column one time by trying to pull the steering wheel that wouldn't budge.

If the steering wheel doesn't come out easily, then I suggest unbolting the steering box and removing the whole assembly as a unit through the cab. Just unscrew the floor plates that are around the steering column.

I have a 54 f600 that the wheel had never been off. I needed to take it off to work on the turn signals and so I got a puller and tried many times and finally bent the puller and pulled the threads out of one of the holes. I had to carefully heat inside the steering tube and put lube in it. I also had to drill two new holes to pull with. PITA!!! Anyway I have owned some trucks that have steering wheels with no holes in them so I had to drill and tap new ones.
