Absolutely, because whatever it is...it's not genuine Ford.
What its function is, I haven't a clue...it doesn't appear to be a vacuum ashtray that Ford
did offer (as an accessory) in 1960.

The part does have a light socket inside. It looks like it should have a lense on the front and the lense on top is burnt from either ash or the light staying on way too long.
The placement of the item made me think that it wasnt stock. The thing that threw me was that it was mounted form behind the dash.

It looks like the kind of light that goes above the rear window to light the bed area.

To me, it looks like a side mounted clearance lamp. It isn't from any Ford....it's a type sold by autoparts stores.
If it is a lamp that illuminates the bed (aka cargo lamp), it sure isn't from any Ford, that's for damn sure!
Ford first offered a cargo lamp in 1967, same thru 1972...it's exactly the same as the 1964/65 Thunderbird backup lamp.
1973/79's resemble 1967/72. 1980/96 is different.

Just guessing of course, but it looks like a running light on the side of semi trailers etc..?

To me it looks like the previous owner needed some interior lighting and made due with whatever was on hand.

oK...
So I guess I need to take that thing off the dash and start filling some holes!
Although the existing wiring/mounting holes might be in a good spot to fab up a din style radio opening.

LOL
I have seen many variations of this set up when I lived in Arkansas. I have even seen desk lamps wired up for interior lighting. Thats where I got the idea from.

The PO may have installed it because it may have had a red lense - to keep from wiping out your night vision, as white light will do.
