power steering pump

Power steering pump spitting fluid from what appears to be a vent hole in the cap. Was told the pump is going, so got a new one to install. Learned you need a puller for the pulley. Does the pump have to be bolted to the engine still to get the pulley off w/a puller ? Was also told to get new hi pressure hose, got that too. Do I need anything else to do a good job here ? Owned truck since new, definitely original pump/hoses etc, 249k miles. 96 F150,5.0,auto. I also believe I need a new a/c compressor clutch. Hard to describe but it was visibly affected when the compressor kicked on/off. Noisy, kind of a squall. Haven't used a/c since. Is this a changeable part (clutch) or does it need a whole new compressor Thanks !

Yes you need a pulley puller. You can rent the puller from autozone for $30 and when you bring it back you get all your money back.

It wouldn't have to be still bolted to the engine but it would make it alot easier.

You are going to need a quart of type F trans fluid.

If I were you I would go ahead and go the Saginaw PS pump swap. You will be much happier with the Saginaw.

Sure you need a puller and all that, BUT some fluid comming out the vent doesn't mean that you need a pump. It just means it was a little over full and got hot. If it's not showing any other symptoms you don't need to bother.

Put a new front seal in my PS pump & replaced the belt last week on my 4.9. Ended up cleaning all the pulleys with brake cleaner and a plastic brush because they had a coating of crap on them. The PS fluid disolved the rubber in the belt, creating a gooey mess. Before that the belt was squeeling/chirping a lot, air on or off. Maybe nothing wrong with your AC other than a slipping belt with PS fluid on it?

Thank yall for the advice. I have the pump, going to swap it since its original. It's a little noisy but not as loud as some I've heard. Thanks for the posts though.

I can't recommend the saginaw conversion enough. It was so nice not to hear that noisy power steering pump anymore.
