I went out for a spin on the two-tracks with my cousins today and came across two guys talking on their cell phones in the middle of nowhere..... they were stuck. They had their Chevy Z71 4x4 absolutely buried in the mud. I decided to tow them out from the rear and I had to bust through a nasty mud hole to do so. I put my shackle in my hitch receiver and got out my 30' recovery strap. I started by pulling in 4-Lo and after two unsuccessful tries I put her back in 4-high and smashed the gas.... got'em out. Sorry couldn't get any pics.... but it was fun
That's something you don't get to see everyday, I'm betting that was one of those sticker only Z71 trucks, if they had the Z71 package they most likely had the rear locker as well and I can say that my old GMC Z71 could go anywhere my Superduty can and then some, they weigh 1k + less pounds, have a locker and more power in their gassers.
it takes more then a solid front axle to fix a modern chevy for actual offroad use..
those frame rails are as low as most cars for gods sake...
Yeah, I think my Mom's 07 Ford Escape has more ground clearance. Those 88 and up GM "trucks" are the most over rated pieces of chit I have ever seen. The Z71 pkg is a joke, a sticker or two, a couple dinky aluminum skid plates, Bilstein shocks, and maybe a locker. And a half assed locker at that, I believe they are called the G80 or Gov Loc... aka "gov bomb". From what I have seen it doesn't take much to grenade a G80 with stock sized tires. Everything about those trucks suck: low hanging frame, wimpy axles, wimpy front suspension, marginal at best transmissions, unreliable 4wd system, CV axles, fuel system issues, junk Vortec motors, I'm sure I can think of more if I had time... About the only good thing that ever came out in the later model GM trucks was between 87 and 95 was the TBI injected motors. I love pulling those guys out.
yeah after we got both trucks pointed back down the trail, and had my gear put away, i reached out my hand and said "that'll be 50 bucks." he didn't find it very funny.... oh well i tried

It's not really that funny because it could have been you buried in the mud and the Chevy pulling you out. You pulled him out and he would have done the same thing for you because it's the right thing to do.
