I don't know the history of the truck unfortunatly, I bought the frame to put a 65 f100 body on it. The owned towed it a few hundred miles with a tire on the drivers side that was a 33" i think, the rest are 31's. I figure that did it in.
A break like that can't be caused by a mis-matched tire.
--dropped clutch at high rpm.
--gear or bearing or other contamination wedging between ring and pinion, breaking case.
--full low-range power against high traction or some other "locking" situation.
--"rocking" the vehicle with a bit too much enthusiasm.
Anyway, you're on the way to repair. BE SURE you replace all bearings, might as well do the axle/wheel bearings as well. AND CLEAN OUT THE HOUSING. That means from grease seal to grease seal--the tubes can hold lots of debris which can cause bearing failure in short order. Ask me how I know....
