I have a 1992 Ford F350 crew cab duallie, 7.3 Turbo Diesel that all of a sudden started stalling today for no reason.I drove about 300 miles yesterday with no problems other than I felt it labored a little on some hills.I filled both tanks with diesel before I left.I used the front tank to get there and switched to the second tank to go home. When I went to start it stalled but fired right up and drove fine all the way home(Thank GOD !!!!) I started it today let it warm up till it came back down off the high idle circut and went to move it while I was turning it just stalled and started right up.RIGHT THERE I KNOW SOMETHING IS WRONG !!!! I went to put it in the garage and hit the throttle in neutral and as soon as it came down it stalled.I tried that about three times and it stalled three times on me.I trie to use a cup of Standyne in both tanks and a cup of Marvel Mystery oil every couple of tank fulls.I read about filling a new filter with trans fluid or Diesel Klean and letting it sit due to possible dirt/sticking govenor or metering valve.
What are the some causes of this problem.I have a long trip coming up in a few weeks and want to get it fixed.
couple off the wall gusses here injectors, short in wiring for something how many miles on her and describe it more how does it idle at stop signs after actually driving etc
Motor was replaced at about 135,000.It has about 145,000 on it now.It really ran fine and did not do it at all yesterday it was stop and go traffic for about an hour towards the last part of the trip.It does not blow any type of smoke at all. With A/C on or off it was fine also. The only thing different that was done was I switched tanks to go back home. The follwing was replaced with in the last two years, return lines and rubber hose/retrun line that goes to tank.Glow plugs,Glow Plug harness, separate ground from Glow plug controller and new GP Controller all from Ford.Temp sensor switch,I also jumped the two thick wires that go from the Glow plug harness too the fuse box.Now that I think about it the truck did sit for about five months with the last no start issue.Maybe fuel in the back tank went bad? I have been driving with the fuel from the front tank for a while.Although I am glad it happened at home I drove for about 40 minutes through Harraman State Park, Upstate NY in the dark due to my GPS taken me on some crazy route. My wife was super nervous I told her not to worry we have plenty of fuel and this truck runs great!!! I was thinking IP pump going or fuel pump going, but I have not had enough time to research today.
sounds right possible for those last 2 do this fill front tank fill fuel filter with favorite fuel addative lucas is what i use diesel clean good to then on front tank let it run 5 min then sit over night then maybe it will be fixed if it was trash give that a try then update me
Thanks I will give filling the filter with additive a try.I can deal with the a bad fuel pump but a bad IP is gonna hurt my wallet and cause the rest of my hair to fall out !!! But if it is I will deal with it ! Thanks I will keep you posted.

So let me get this straight.Fill filter with fuel cleaner and run for 5 min with front tank which is the tank with the good gas then drive and see what happens?
After you fill the fuel filter with diesel klean run the engine for a short tie to get the additive in the pump. Shut it off and let it sit for a couple of hours, overnight would be better. Then take it out and drive it like you stole it. It doesn't matter which tank it is on, unless you have water in one. I have never had diesel go bad from sitting.

Sounds like a plan I will report back with results.
Thanks
After filling the filter with your favorite cleaner/lubricator run it for about 30-45 seconds, no more ... any more will transfer all the cleaner/lubricator beyond the IP into the tank.
Diesel will get Bio matter in it from sitting a long time...... If you "know" it has bio then you can kill it with special chemicals...... However the recovery is costlier than dumping the fuel. It usually uses 3-4+ new fuel filters to get it out...... and the chemical is highly dangerous if skin contact is made.
Normally when you fill a filter with an additive or other product it is a NEW filter.. no sense filling a plugged or dirty filter. Also check the water separator.
I pulled the fuel/water seperator tonight only to find some sediment in the filter. All I can think of is I got some crap on my fill up.I then cut it open with the wiz wheel(its all I had)The paper element was like a light chocolate shake color and caked up.I squeezed it and it oozed like a shake.I also saw some greenish like liquid mixed it.I filled the new filter with Diesel Kleen switched tanks fire it and let it run for 34 sec(I used a stop watch)No problems starting or running it. What should be my next plan of action. How many tank fulls/filters will it take to clean this crap out.Fule filter was changed about 3,500 miles ago but the truck does sit and did sit for about five months.P.S. where can I get fuel filter/seperators at a good price being I am gonna need a few.It was 30.00 for one.
I forgot to mention to add a real strong dose of diesel kleen to the tanks, about 3 to 4 times the amount called for. Sounds like you found the cause of the sticky govenor/metering valve.
OK Thanks im gonna fill them uptanks that is and put some Diesel Kleen and drive it when should I change the filter again ?
Another question do you think I picked up a bad batch of fuel? as well as having water in the tank.I am thinking the brown/milk shake is gonna be water.
I went through three used IPs just like this. Took me a while to figure out what the problem was. The two main high pressure pistons were getting stuck to their cylinder walls due to lack of lubrication. The only option I found was to mix some biodiesel and/or some filtered WVO into the fuel to give it extra added lubrication. That expensive stuff in a bottle at the store just doesn't do it. Way too diluted to do any good. I ruined 2 IP's in a month like this. As soon as the 3rd one started the symptoms you were talking about I mixed about 3 gallons of bio in with about 10 gallons of diesel. That IP is still running now a year later.
