exhaust opinion please.

The truck finally went on the road yesterday for first time. Had to cut the exhuast under the cab after the cats and welded on a thrush. It sounds ok but way to quiet. I have it exiting right in front of the passenger rear tire. What are some options? Flowmaster 40 series? cutting the cat out ? any input would be appreciated.

best bang for buck as far as making it louder is cutting off all cats and using straight pipe. Also a glasspack type of muffler is generally louder then say a turbo style or a "flowmaster" style muffler

Do they have vehicle inspections in New Jersey? No use wasting time and money on something that won't pass.

First off what engine do you have?

I just redid the exhaust on my own in my shop class this year. I decided to cut off both the cat and muffler, and ran 45 degree turns out the back. I love the sound. Its fairly quite at idle but with a deep roar. As you throttle she gets louder and louder still with a deep roar. Then at full throttle she sounds meannnn.

I am going to remove my cat as well, what did you do with (if any) of your emission sensors?

Not knowing what they had for motors or years they may not have h a d much of snything, like my 81 F100, so they could run what ever they wanted to.

I don't see why you can't cut the pipe after t he O2 bung and install what you want?
Again my truck does not have the O2 setup but the EFI manifolds and head pipe do. I removed the cat and used a pipe to fill the gap.

I've been having discussions on this on the 460 forum.
I have a cat now (but no emissions on engine) so I was thinking about removing it when I redo the exhaust (I'm rebuilding from header back). I was not sure if the cat even worked with out the other emissions devices.

However based on feedback I received, I'm convinced now to keep the Cat. Even without any other emissions devices the Cat will still function and it does some good.

It will reduce or eliminate the exhaust "stink" you get without a Cat on performance engines - which is from the rich tune and is unpleasant to the eyes and nose.

Note that if your buying a new Cat don't get the cheap "honeycomb" style as these can overheat and melt - which then restricts exhaust flow. You need to get "metal core" one.
A high-flow metal-core Cat (3") is less than $100.

I have owned my '86 302 EFI since new. After I had put three or four new OEM mufflers on it I decided to go with a Flowmaster aluminum one thinking it may not rust out so quickly. I wanted the quieter muffler option. The parts counter guy wanted me to buy the loud one. He stocked the loud ones and would need to order the quieter one. He then offered more advice than he should have. He told me my truck was so quiet already with two catalytic converters, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two options.

I bought a strait piece of pipe, put a slight offset in it, swaged one end, installed it in place of a muffler. It's damn quiet with stock exhaust out the right rear. Been like that for about ten years. At least two or three OEM mufflers worth.
