While 3/4s of the way under my truck to back off the brake shoes by adjusting the self-adjusting screw, the retraction spring broke. Probably my fault, but anyway, the self-adjusting mechanism no longer works.
I yanked and pryed as best I could for an hour and a half with Grandpa's old pry bar (for some reason it seems to have a lot of blue smoke varnish on it) and screwdrivers, fingers, etc, etc.
It was suggested to me that this is where "dedication and creativity" come in. Anyone have a good trick up their sleeve to ease the pain?
Oh, and does anyone know of a reasonably-priced source of 2-9/16" spline nut sockets? Got one on loan, but it's flared out from much use.
Really? That's neat. Napa is on the other side of town, so I don't get over there enough. I try to save up my part numbers and do them all at the same time...
Got the drum backed off enough to see the shoes. Got a tip to just clip the old retainer springs on the side. Should be able to get at them now.
Well, cutting the shoe retaining springs didn't help. Neither did banging in the cylinder (p'brake flange in the way). Yanking like Hercules with Grandpa's old pry bar finally worked.
I made the situation worse by concentrating on pulling on the top of the drum and not putting enough uumph into the bottom.
