How hard would it be to put a factory clock into my '86 F-150 that dosn't have one, assuming I could find a donor truck in the junkyard, or a swapmeet part. Is wiring already in place? Plug in and go? Or...? TIA
I know for the tach instrument cluster, that the plug in the back has to be 18 pins. The standard instrument cluster with the dummy lights, has a 14 pin connector. So if you have the dummy lights i don't imagine it would plug right in...but if you have guages, go find a clock dash and plug it in.
Get in under the dash(well, pull the dash cap, it's easier... LOL) and look for a plug around the heater controls, to the pass. side, I haven't seen a truck without that plug yet, I'll dig up the wire colour coding here in a second. The clock was avalable as an option on any truck, no matter if it had idiot lights or guages. I have to dig into mine here again soon, my criuse control has a short, and killed that circut...

My truck came from the factory with guages and no tach. My dad (it was his truck new) bought the factory tach from ford, along with a new printed circut board to go with it, but kept all other guages and wiring. I guess the plug for the clock is in there than. I'll pull the plate off when I get a chance and see what I can see in there. Now the hard part will be finding a dash with clock! Probably obsolete or overpriced from Ford now. Thanks
What I ended up doing with my factory dash was just cutting it out for the clock. If you're carefull about it and have a good sharp knife, you can make it look like it's supposed to be that way.
As for the clock itself, they aren't too hard to find.

The clock will fit with no problem if you cut out your radio/heater bezel like 82F100SWB said. There's a wiring harness section that attaches directly to the clock and runs down beside the radio to ANOTHER section that goes in between 2 existing connectors. You'll need both additional sections to use the factory connectors, but you could just splice into the wires and have it work fine. The existing connectors are plugged together and are at the bottom of the dash near the passenger-side brace, probably visible from the passenger footwell. They're 6- or 8-position connectors with a LG/Y wire and about 4 others. You might find it here.
