I have a 2005 f250 Harley Davdison (turbo diesel). The thing just outright turned off on the highway and wont start. I feel like its the fuel pump but I would like to trouble shoot it before I drop the tank. I havent had the truck all that long so I dont know if it was run much on empty. The last time my fuel pump went out the gage stopped working first (in my old GMC). However, my fuel gage in the 250 does work. The truck seemed to have been idling a bit rough.
Your fuel pump is on the inside of the frame rail, drivers side, right under the drivers seat. It is not in the tank like a gasser.
First thing you can do is to open the secondary fuel filter cap and check for fuel. You will find that on top of the engine. You will see two plastic caps, the large one is the oil filter, and the smaller one is the fuel filter. Open the smaller one (use a 15/16" socket) and check the bowl for fuel. It should be full. If it is not, you can have some one turn the key on momentarily and see if there is any flow. If not, it probably is the fuel pump.
But odds are that is NOT the problem, and you will need to either visit the dealer shop or visit the 6.0 engine forum here at FTE.
How long since you changed the fuel filters? I'll bet a long time, and that's the second thing I would do.
yea, i dont know how long its been, i havent had the truck that long. the gas pedal felt like it kinda lost some of its firmness or resistance. Thanks for your help.
ok, yea it was not the fuel pump. the canister did fill up. the filter looked clean. i got all new filters so i changed it anyway. i wouldnt even know what the next step would be.
Your next step would be to read any codes. Did the check engine light come on? There should be some code stored whenever the engine shuts down on you. It is probably beyond your capabilities at this point, and you need to take it to an expert.
Posting in the 6.0 forum is still a good idea. Then you might get some clues before the shop gets their hands on it.
