My front axle seal on the driver side just started leaking, i did a search and found some information but still have some questions... first off i read i need some special tool to insert new seals does some one have a pic. of this tool or tell me how to make one also do i need a special tool to take the old seals out, why should i put the carrier in a bag and then place in ice....sorry for the long post i just never worked on a front diff before....
Others have made the tool out of 1.25 in diameter pipe nipple, cap and floor plate. I think you still have to grind down the floor plate slightly. I estimated the cost at about $20. The mechanic at my local Ford dealer lent me his and this is the ame tool currently on Ebay-#230488847881 for around $55.
I just saw this post. Did you ever get this figured out? Searches don't seem to turn much up on this topic.
My question to you is: Where are (or did) you notice the fluid leak? Was it inboard of the axle U-joint?
That is where I'm seeing some fluid weeping on my '99.5 F250. There is a seal at the end of the axle tube. I know 'cause I replaced it when I did the ball joints.
I understand that the seal at the end of the axle tube is just there to keep dirt and water out of the axle tube. I know it does NOT seal the gear lube in the differential housing. There should not be any diff lube in the axle housing.
