I have had an intermittent problem lately when I start my '89 I6. When it is started it runs rough, almost seems to be missing, and then smoothes out, and appears to run fine. It does not do this all the time, and has started this since it has turned cold (o.k. cold for Florida). It does not however seem to always happen first thing in the a.m. when it is the coldest. I bought one of those $30 testers and hooked it up to try and see if there were any codes. On the KOEO test it sent no codes at all. Not even the 11 code.
1) Ideas on the rough idle?
2) Is the $30 tester working or is it a piece of junk, or is there another problem with the test circuit?
The $30 tester is a plasitc box with an LED & a couple of switches connected STRAIGHT to the connector on the top. It has NO "circuitry" inside. It does the same thing as this page tells you to do with a paperclip. Try to return it for a refund. You don't need a scantool for EEC-IV computers ('84-95), but a Haynes manual is much more thorough than that site.
Once you actually get the codes out of it, look them up there and post them if you need more advice on what they mean. DON'T just start buying the parts that are mentioned in the codes!
The most likely suspect for any rough idle condition is the IAC, which is a $30 part (you could trade that scanner for it) and takes a few minutes to swap. Read about it here.
I will try and check those after the weekend. (I have to take the Cub Scouts camping in the rain!) If there was no code sent what does that mean? I have noticed that this does not appear to happen first thing in the morning but after the truck usually sits and is restarted. But it may sit at work all day, so it is essentially a cold start. I will check the IAC and try and return the tester.
I checked the resistance on the IAC last night (I left it in place and just disconnected the wiring) and got an acceptable reading. I have checked the vacuum hoses and have yet to see any leaks or disonnected hoses. Any other suggestions? Still occasionally runs rough on start, but not every time. Then it seems to clear itself as you head down the road fairly quickly (less than a mile). You can feel it pick up power as it does so, and seems to run as usual. It does seem to be a little louder than usual lately all of the time. I have been all under the truck and can not find an exhaust leak or anything else loose.
I won't say never on the muffler, but it is only about a year old. I got the codes out of the computer using the multimeter. $30 tester still didn't work! I am not sure on decyphering the results but here goes. The codes are as follows:
KOEO Two sweeps, pause, two sweeps, long pause, sweep, long pause, two sweeps, pause , two sweeps. I did not see any "short sweeps" all seemed to sweep to the same point. Is this a 22, or is this 11 repeated twice?
KOER Once I got a 25 and then 11 ( I think) (2 sweeps, 5 sweeps then 1 sweep 1 sweep. When I tried again I just got 11's.
