Hello All. First post. I have a 02 XLT. The rear brakes are not working. Replaced the parking brake shoes and the disc pads. The master cylinder is full. They have not been working for a while it seems. Had a rear sensor replaced a couple years ago. Does the ABS system need to be reset ? If so, how is that done ? Thanks.
I'll suggest that you start by bleeding the brakes. Make sure fluid is even making it to the rear calipers.
What are you basing your comment on that the rear aren't working? Is it because the rotor braking surfaces are not smooth and shiney, or something else?
Hi shorod. I noticed a while ago after it rained, the rotors got rusty. After I drove the car and stopped, the rust was still there. There is no wear or friction going on.The pistons are loose and everything looks as it should. What about a ABS reset ? Someone I talked to mentioned this. I will bleed the brakes today. Thanks.
The ABS isn't really part of the normal braking system, if so you would not be able to bleed the brakes without activating the ABS system. Granted to "properly" flush the brakes requires activating the ABS pump, but that's more to get fresh fluid circulating in the pump than to bleed the brakes. During normal braking the ABS pump does not have an effect, and there is no "reset" for the ABS pump. You can "reset" the ABS module, but that's for the diagnostics.
Without seeing the rotors and knowing how aggressively you used the brakes, I'm not sure how abnormal what you experienced that caused you to change out the brakes is. A vast majority of the braking is done by the front brakes. Under light driving and braking you might not notice much scrubbing of the rear rotors.
