Wire it up on the starter solenoid
That way it comes on/off with the key

Easiest way I think, and alot less wire than running it inside the cab
bigric, I don't think a 38 amp alt. will handle it but it shouldn't be too hard to convert to at least 60 amps by changing the stator. The regulator should be the same.
Feed a relay (or 2 relays for 2 stage cooling) from the solenoid but control the relays from the cab. Manual or automatic or combination. Your choice.

Actually, OEMs use it because cost of assembly is much faster and cheaper, especially on vehicles with the engine crammed against the radiator.
Instead of tensioning and putting on 5-6 belts, they slip on a serp. belt and viola, all done. No more warranty belt adjustments either once the vehicle was delivered. No more designing in adjusters for each component etc. Any VERY minute gains in H.P. was not the driving factor in the conversions.
