Just another rant........

Went to the dealership today to get 2 quarts of vc9 and 4 gallons of premium gold coolant. At the parts counter the mister know-it-all parts guy tells me 2 quarts of vc9 is overkill and I only need 2 gallons of coolant. With all the info from this wonderful site I tell the guy that doesn't sound correct so he tells me to talk to the service manager. So off to the service (other mister know-it-all) manager I go. He says the exact same thing the parts guy says but tells me that I'm not flushing the system I'm just draining the coolant and adding it back. I explained the whole procedure of what I was doing (info I got off here) and he tells me that's not going to flush the system out. So I go to a tech and talk to him about it. He tells me he puts 2 quarts of vc9 in the system and when he's done flushing it he only adds 2 gallons of coolant and 2 gallons of distilled water. Now reading in the owners manual the system holds 27.5 quarts of fluid. Why is it these guys always look at me like I'm smoking crack and don't have any clue as to what I'm talking about and just want to argue with me about it?

It all comes down to who you choose to believe. Ford who tells you that the system holds 28 quarts or the people at the dealership who obviously don't have a clue WTF they are talking about.

For your own peace of mind do this. Measure how much fluid you drain from the radiator drain **** and subtract that number from 28. That way you'll know exactly how much fluid is left in the rest of the cooling system.

It sounds to me like the PM, SM, and Tech aren't accounting for the fluid left in the rest of the cooling sytem when they drain the radiator. Maybe they forgot to take that into account while they were passing around their crack pipe in the back of the parts room. PM me the telephone number and I'll call them up just for s**ts and grins.

OH GEEZ--you're in Ok. Maybe I should just take a road trip if they are close. Can you tell I'm bored to tears??

What you got there was a first hand lesson on how they would have done it for you, and why we do these things ourselves.

That's probably what they were thinking of was just the coolant in the radiator. It just bugs me when they look at me like I'm a crackhead. I'm just waiting for the time I go in there and they ask me for a hit off the pipe. Seriously! With a $45000 truck do they think I'm not gonna research the things that I'm gonna do to it? The SM kept asking me if I was gonna try and flush it sticking a garden hose in it and let it run for a few hours! WTF!

Oh yeah and before I left he said I should just get rid of my 6.0 and get a 6.7 cause these new engines are gonna be flawless. Really? Would be nice to have a vehical that never needs any work done to it.

AND how he would have ended up with a 25/75% solution of antifreeze and water and a busted block next time it got really cold in OK.

What a mess. My parts guy just handed over the 2 quarts of VC9 ( He did insist they were gallons of VC9 but I just ignored him since they were the right price and any body could look at them and know they were quarts). And the good folks at Napa new percisely what antifreeze I needed when I told them what it was for. They would have let me buy as many gallons as I wanted of Zerex GO 5 for $12.99 a gallon. Ford wanted $23.

Oh yeah and I forgot to mention this. They told me my truck is supposed to have green coolant in it and not to change to the gold until I get to 100000 miles. Lol!

You really do need to share the name of this dealership so we can ALL know where to NOT go. I'm not surprised though. I've seen worse things than that from bigger dealerships and I wasn't surprised when Ford walked through the doors with chains to padlock them.

Ive got two dealerships close to me and I don't trust either one. Bad thing is I need a tranny flush and would really like it hooked up to a machine to flush it but how the heck do I know if they're gonna do it right. They won't let me stand back there and watch em do it. Wonder if they'll just let me use a slot and they're machine? Hmmmm............

ok so there is some truth to the 4 gallons.....
see when you open the valev on the bottom of the radiator and drain that thats what you have in the pan.... 4 gallons.

That means noone is pulling the block plugs and draing that. also noone is removeing a heater hoses and draining the heater core.
now if you did all that you would still have maybe just over a gallon left in the system.

Yup--the procedure in the tech folder was written in such a way that it could be done without draining the block. Most "shade tree" mechanics won't do that. That's why it was recommended to flush the system numerous times so that you would end up with nothing but straight distilled water throughout the whole system. That way you can go back with 3.5 gallons of straight G05 and have a 50/50 mix. It may not be the best way, but it works quite well.
