Getting this F150 started

First of all, I have done some searching through your forums, havn't found exactly what im looking for yet. I apologize for my first post being a question, But I will do my best to contribute to the site community as time goes on!

Info:

1986 F150
302 automatic, injected.
sat for 8 months
gas in tank smelled awful, loaded up with 8 gallons of fresh fuel
new starter
new starter solenoid
all things plugged in
all wires tight
brakes blew out one night while driving - towed it to the yard and has been sitting since.

progress:

turns over well - catch, catch, catch, start for 2 seconds, shut off, catch catch catch... repeat... once this morning it started and revved up a bit, then shut right off.

will sound like it has a better chance of starting if i turn the key on and off a few times which is turning the fuel pump on and off without turning over the motor. sounds to me like i have a fuel delivery problem.

a ford mechanic that I know said to take the fpr out (which he said is located above the rear end) and clean it out well then put it back in.

I just wanted to ask what you all think. I'm a japanese auto tech, I know very little about the ins and outs of ford trucks. This seems like the place to be!

Put a code reader on it to make sure there are no codes. Also look at the fuel rail on th engine that feeds the injectors fuel, and see if you have a test port(some of the early trucks didn't). If you do, you can put a pressure tester on it and see what the fuel pressure is. It should be in the neighborhood of 39 psi.

You have a early fuel injection system, so you probably have 3 fuel pumps if you have dual tanks, low pressure pumps in the tanks and a high pressure pump on the frame rail.

figured out whats happening.

the piston rings had "seized up" from sitting so long. I hooked up a hose to the valve cover on the drivers side bank, first few tries to start this morning got quite a bit of smoke coming out of that hose.

as i got it started more and more (more oil lubricating the piston walls and rings) then there was less and less smoke coming out.

as the compression is getting better each day, the truck starts/runs better and better.

if it wasnt getting progressively better i would think it was a valve issue.

im open to any other ideas, thank you so much already Dave, and i look forward to meeting some more of the forum members!
