I have several ford diesels in our fleet at work. Glow plugs re nothing new in our 7.3's Does anyone know of a quick way to test the glowplugs in a powerstroke. I hate to pull the rocker arm covers every time to test the plugs. Is there a amp draw or ohm reading that I can pull off of the wiring harnes at some point without pulling the covers?
As a footnote how high of exhaust temp do you guys feel is safe. One of our trucks scored up after only 73,000. What do you think is a safe temp in a hard pull?

As far as exhaust gas temps the figure I have seen most commonly around here is that you don't want to exceed 1300 - 1350 degrees. There was a good post by someone not long ago that gave a good step by step on using an volt-meter to test glow plugs...
The outside pins on the valve cover gasket connectors are for the glow plugs. 4 connectors (2 on each side). Check pin to ground to see if it is open or not. Some one else may be able to say for sure but I believe that under 1 ohm is good? duece
On 97 and earlier powerstrokes there are 2 connectors per valve cover and its the outside 2 pins per connector. a good trick is to find an old harness, sometimes a tech at a dealer may have one laying around. and cut off one of the valve cover connectors and strip about 1/2 inch from the end of the wires then use the outside two wires (brown ones) and measure resistance. If you have a bad glow plug it will usually read extrmely high in the kilo or mega ohms. I ve seen hot psd measure 8 ohms per glow plug and cold ones under 1 ohm. Fords spec on the relay is under 2 tenths of a voltage drop across the 2-big terminals on the relay when it is energized. also on the older psd's 94-96 watch for melted harnesses can short out injecotrs if bad enough.
