Super Duty Engines??

I was looking through my 79 Shop manual and there is a section on Supper Duty engines, 475, 477 and a 535.

The 535 has a whopping 4.5" bore.

Obviously a truck engine, but has anybody heard what kind of HP one could get?

I've been around Ford for 30 years and just learned something new.

Anybody have one?
are they any good?

SUPER Duty, SUPPER Duty engines are in mobile catering rigs.

Read all about it:

401, 477, & 534 SD Engines - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

277 hp/ 490 lb/ft, according to this:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/4...yone-else.html

There are other threads there with specs as well.

What kind of HP could you get? I'd guess if you put a couple of turbos on one, you could see 350 or better, with a lot more low end torque.

Several people have them on that forum and on the large truck forum up top--mostly retired fire trucks of late.

Any good? They are obsolete. Designed when gas was 20 CENTS per gallon, they represent a bygone era. They make no sense economically or power wise for commercial use, and they have almost no performance potential for hobby or hot rod use. The weigh something like 1100 lbs as well.

You want power? Build a 460 or an FE.

FWIW, a recent thread on the large truck thread:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...need-this.html

Not much on the 534 yet, but his runs well and is probably one of the best examples of how these work and perform in OEM condition, so stay tuned for a report from that fellow if you have a hankerin' for more 534...

Be advised if you are trying to do the "Mine's bigger" thing, you are only half way there with the 534:

yeah.. my neighbor has an old like 70's international flatbed with a huge gas motor in it, 4 speed on the floor with 2 speed rear end, and its a total turd. It can't get out of its own way.

A farmer I worked for when I was a young guy had an IH loadstar from I'm guessing the early to mid 80s that had a 504 in it. Would pull like a sob loaded or empty. It was no race engine but it would haul 500 hampers of green beans down the road at 70 mph if you had the road and didnt take long to get there.

oh yeah, he had a rollback bed on it and he'd haul some pretty big dozers on it and such for his oil and gas company. It was no question of whether it'd make it. But as far as it needing to pull hills in low gear at 20 mph.. yeah.. it sucked.
