Getting engine started??

I soon am going to get a 1979 F-250 with a 351m. It has been sitting for about 3 years now. The pulleys all have surface rust on them, but the engine does turn over if you move the fan.Do you guys have any suggestions on what to do before i attempt to start it?? Thanks in advance.

Soak the cylinders. Drain & refill all kinds of fluids. Clean under the hood.

There are many varations on how to soak cylinders. Some people use Marvel Mystery Oil, some use ATF, some use vinegar...etc, etc. You soak cylinders by removing the spark plugs and pour the fluid in the spark plug holes. A tablespoon of fluid is good enough. Soak for 2-4 days.

By the way, clean the fuel line. Throw away the old gas and clean out the gas tank.

Red face Getting engine started??

You'll very likely have some bad smelling, goomey fuel in the tank too.
Put at least Five gal of fresh fuel in there and clean out the filters up near the Carb.
I put the Air hose into my tank, and blew all the bad gas out the front (into a bucket) and then re-connected the line to the tank/fuelpump.
Test the fuel pump now! (Remove the plugs, put oil down the holes)
I took the Fuel line off up at the Carb, put an extension on it and ran the starter over(oiling the cylinder walls at the same time) till I was sure the Pump was pumping fuel.
Then: (with brand new plugs installed) I got a little plastic squeeze bottle with gas in it.
I used a remote starter switch, poured a little fuel down the carb and turned it over, with the Ign switch on, and see what happens.

Getting engine started??

be carefull when doing that tho, dont want to tweak anything arround it. Also befor you drive it away, if you have access to an air compressor take off the headers and blow air down all of them... A ffiend of mine had a bird and some mice in his... just a thought... also... umm...make sure the breaks will stop you, if they are not so good bleed them. black stuff might come out if it has been siting for a while, also when you get her home take off the wheels and grease all of the moveing parts/repack the wheel bearings, they tend to dry up. this happend on my 77 F-100 and I have power steering and it was like I had(easy steering power steering) I could turn the wheel buy it would stay in the position I would turn it and not return to center? lol, but I have yet to fix it because I dont have the time or tools.
