cummins transplant?

Howdy folks,

I have been thinking about which way to go in light of all this anti-pollution stuf in the new trucks and also owned two dodge trucks with the I-6 cummins 5.9b motor. So here's an idea: what if I found say a '97 to 2k model and did a body-off resto AND swapped out to a cummins diesel? Then it would be the best of both worlds, a ford super-duty and a cummins 5.9. Not sure about which tranny to mate up to it.

Has anyone on here ever done this? If so, would sure like to read up on it. The new 2011 trucks look awesome, but all that anti-pollution stuff just looks like a lot more to break and cause grief, plus the fuel mileage.

Any feedback or thoughts on this appreciated.

When did the torqueshift transmission come out? I had kind of thought I would use the NV4500 six-speed manual as that was what was in both of my dodge trucks and I liked the way it shifted plus the cluctch can be ordered to go with expected power output. Rowing through the gears and listening to the turbos spool up (my '99 had twin turbos!) was just pure music to my ears. Just think of a 1994 F350 (were they superduties back then?) 4-door [the classic of all time body style for the big fords] with a stout cummins 5.9 "B" engine, properly restored and with the engine swap done to high-quality specs to look as good as or better than factory. That would be the truck to have IMHO. However if a torqueshift transmission would handle > 450 hp and > 1000 ft. lbs. torque without blowing up that would be great too. The more I think about restoring a 1994 F350 and swapping in a cummins 5.9 the better I like it.

I think the torqueshift came out in 04 behind the 6.0 Powerstroke. I have not checked on the adapters available to the 5.9. There's been several improvements to the torqueshift and in the 2011 trucks, is now a 6 speed. It's kind of designed on the Allison for trucks, not the light duty Allison behind GM stuff.

As with any later model auto trans, you need the wiring and a computer. The new Ford trucks have something like 725 ft.lbs of torque, stock.

Only problem I have with a Cummins swap is these trucks are not setup gearing wise to utilize the torque curve of the 5.9, it needs to live between 1400-1900 rpm for the best mileage and pulling power. My C-6 with gearvendor overdrive and 4:10's isn't even close to an ideal solution. 3:08's with a 6600 series 10sp might do the trick.

your truck

up until 97 the 250's and 350's were just called heavy duties.there were no 1998s and in 1999 the superduty arrived.in 2003 they came out with torqshift, called the 5r110w.most guy's say its probably better than the allison.2011s have a new version called the 6r140w that has 2 power takes on it.one of which can be used while driving.think like powering your plow with it.i don't know if they will adapt to the 5.9 though.i'll see if i san find ouy.

The new transmission does sound like the perfect match; heck the whole new ford superduty is awesome unfortunately they are proud of those trucks too. Over 60k is prohibitive to me for a purchase.

Well, I dont blame you for the idea of the resto on a 1994, I am kinda partial to them as well

I wish I had the $$$ for my dream super duty, but holy cows.. the price! Good lord! So I went to swapping out for a 7.3. I am not sure what is involved in tossing a cummins into one of these, but I can say electronics in the Ford is cake! So maybe that might add some encouragement!

I'm in the middle of a 2000 S/D to 12v swap not a bad swap if you do a straight forward swap but mine isn't. A few things that make it different is that I put a 501 air compressor on it so throttle linkage and P/S pump wouldn't fit and also have twins on it also did not want to move engine back the 2 1/2" to use stock fan so I moved ford rad. forward using a 3 gen I/C and A/C condenser. all most complete should have it running this week. this is my DD and I pull a 5'er about 24,000# total. I have a thread going on NW BOMBERS transplant project - BOMBER Board

I have been researching the International 6.0 litre a lot and that makes me more determined than ever to put a cummins inline 6 cyl. into ford truck. Why couldn't ford have had the cummins instead of dodge? I really need the capability of accessing the TC, the injectors, and general engine bay access for working on it and doing mods etc. With the IH diesels, doing the above is impossible. So the idea of just getting a 2007 or thereabouts doesn't seem like a very good idea. I love ford trucks but I would much rather have an inline 6-cyl. engine, and a manual 6-spd transmission. Guess I'm going to have to build it the way I want it.

that's why I doing this swap. I already have a 78 ford CC 4x4 with a cummins in it. bought the truck new in 77 had many engines in it 429,460,6.9w/turbo. was a std cab long box needed more room extended the frame and put CC on and mid 90's got my first cummins and put that in it and haven't looked back, had a 97 dodge 3/4 ton converted it to a 1 ton dulley, sold it and got this S/D to put my cummins in it.
