I have a 97 expy and am considering adding a turbocharger. Does anyone have any experience adding a turbo to their expedition? What mfg did you use. Who did the installation? Are you happy with the results? Thanks in advance.
first of all you dont turbo charge a truck like this.. thats just wrong.. turbo's are made for little import ricers that "wanna race" keep in mind that a expedition IS NOT A RACE CAR.. if you bough it for that then your SOL.. you could supercharge it to up the torque a whole bunch.. but unless you had the 4.6 i wouldnt even bother.. i have a 99 xlt with a 5.4 and it is plenty good enuff for me.. but when i feel the need to move i just park that and get into my 92 tbird sc 5spd and go play.. thats why ya gotta have 2 cars
I agree no turbo for them. Besides, no one makes an emmisions legal one for the F150's yet.
Supercharge, yes! Magnacharger, Holley Thunder are a good place to start. Roots type that give you more power quicker. Centrifugal may produce more power, but not until you get the RPM's up. I don't think that's a good match for a 5500lb SUV.
If you don't want to spend $4k-$6k, throw on a few bolt-ons. I prefer Superchip and think it was the biggest bang for the buck. Improved air intake (whether modified OEM box or FIPK) and good cat back.
And yes, I'm considering a roots type for mine (although I don't know that I'll convince myself to do it). So what if it's an SUV. For practical reasons, it improves towing considerably. If you don't tow, like I don't, then you'll juet have a 5500lb SUV that might get into the 15's in the 1/4 mile and haul the family to Grandmas in comfort.

Heard from a friend of mine that runs Thompson Dragraceway that they had a fully loaded Expedition out at the track that was running in the 12.90's with a huge Vortec on it so it is possible to go fast in our Big rigs but better keep it straight and have alot of jack to spend out those luxuries
Hi Rick995 does your friend have any pictures or video ?
I would love to see that EXPY. SH#T at those numbers he is running with a Lightning if not faster. Did this Expy has go-go ju-ice NOS?
What kind of tires ?
Does he still use his Expy for everyday driving ?
I would love to Supercharge my EXPY. I need to save alot.
But if these numbers are true and I hope they are, then it is worth every penny
I have an 01 Xped with the standard 4.6 Liter V8. Ive added a Cat Back System and Dual Flowmaster Exhaust. K&N Cold Air Intake is on order, and im resarching a Jetchip. All said and Done I should be pushing somewhere near 300hp when im done. Just some Ideas. I dont think a Turbocharger is available for an Expedition..tho i have seen pictures of an SVT Expedition.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Jan-02 AT 11:22 AM (EST)]I have a 99 XLT 4X4 with the 5.4. I have installed the Holley Thunder Package to compensate for altitude (live in Denver) and for a little more fun. At first it seemed a hell of a lot torquier, but it still didnt feel extremely fast. The package comes with a new air filter that goes in the stock airbox. I used a dremel to cut the adapter off and retrofit a K&N open filter. Oh my god!!! The vehicle is completely sick at this point. Not only did I get a great towing vehicle that is not afraid of altitude, the thing is just a blast to drive. Lets just say merging isnt a problem.
You should also note I put jba headers on it and had dual exhaust ran straight out the back.
Of course, I had to concentrate on suspension at that point. Edelbrock IAS shocks all around and rear hellwig antisway bar.
Whatever you are hearing about "that is not what it is intended for", just let those retirement home fanatics stay in the right hand lane. If you have to drive, why not enjoy it.
My research has shown that a 3.55 rearend does not bode well with a supercharger.
