Good evening! I just purchased a 1992 F-350 Dually diesel and on the way back home, the exhaust broke apart. I will be using this truck for pulling a future travel trailer. With that being said, I would like to fix the exhaust since it is SUPER loud currently.
After reading and searching on the forums, I am not 100% sure on what to do. I would like to purchase a new exhaust system to help lower EGTs (hope that is right), but I do not want a LOUD system. Since this will be for traveling, I would like a stock sound.
What is everyone's recommendations? Is it the easiest to just replace the pieces that are broken, or buy an aftermarket exhaust system? Thank you very much in advance!
If I was you I'd take it to an exhaust shop....some of the after market setups you can buy and "bolt right on" are crap and don't lower your egt's any.....also with a non turbo exhaust the most important part on it is the Y pipe where both the pipes connect into one pipe.....a good size pipe to use would be 3 inches I think, some say it's a little over kill but I like the sound of 3 inch pipe it makes it deeper....as for a good muffler I'd use a flowmaster......there's another member on here who built an exhaust with a flowmaster and it sounds great....anyways yeah just take it to a exhaust whop it will be cheaper in the long run and work better than any bolt on deal.
mabc926 is basically correct, take it to a muffler shop, have them build the Y pipe out of 2.25" and where they tie together ensure they do it in a fashion that it flows smoothly into 3" or larger and does not get all choked up like the factory Y.
Personally I would go 2.25" into 3.5 ... Many shops cannot do 3.5".
Use a free flowing noise canceling chambered muffler designed for a Diesel.
I've got a true dual 2.25" system into a 2 IN 1 OUT big rig muffler (the muffler is a monster) and out the back with a mandrel bend 3" pipe. The muffler keeps the tone down and is extremely free flowing. I love not driving an obnoxiously loud truck everywhere. You can hear the "pfffffffffffffffff" noise when you get on the skinny pedal from the muffler and the exhaust has a nice mellow tone.
mines preety loud and it just has the converter cut out of stock exaust and 3.5in tip i mean it would lower egts cause it is free flowing but then noise no it would be a little louder

Your converter is not cut out, it doesn't have one, never did!
well you can see where it has been replaced with a piece of 2.5in straight pipe maybe it didint but it looks 99% like it did and if those are ford factory welds i feel srry for that guy he needed to do a different trade lol
