Saw this truck for sale recently, listed as a '92 F150....
First I notice that it is the 87-91 bricknose, not a 92. Second I see the rear wheel has 8 studs, which tells me it is either an F250 or 350 rear axle at least. Looking at the front axle, again, looks like 8 studs, indicating a heavier axle. Something is missing from the hub centre, either a locking hub for 4wd, or dust cap for 2wd.
Then I see leaf springs on the front? The only 2wd Fords of that era with leafs on front that I'm aware of is the Superduty with 10 stud wheels, which this definitely isn't, so I'm thinking that this is either a Dana 44, Dana 50, or Dana 60 front axle and the truck is actually 4wd.
I also notice no front bumper....another possibility this was a plow truck, and they've taken the plow etc off to use on another truck.
No clue if it's gas or diesel, but if the price is right, I might grab it for the front axle, transfer case, and part out/scrap the rest, not sure, but I hope to go see it Sunday.
Anyone else have any thoughts/guesses on what this truck really is?
Looks to me like the badge says F350. I can't tell what the rear axle is. Does not seem to be any hub sticking out. Front axle kind of looks like a hub. I blew the pic up quite a bit to try to see more details but it's low resolution makes it tough.
Rear axle is a semi-floater, so truck is not an F350. It's also a 4x4, and yes you are correct in that at least one of the locking hubs is missing. I'd think it's a '91 F250, instead of a '92 F150, maybe the poster of the ad was typing in too fast and not paying attention much? On the other hand the tail lights and the doors are correct for a '92-'96 truck...
Hmmm. If it is a ttb 50, or a D60, I'd grab it for that alone, along with the transfer case for spare parts. If it's diesel then I'd have other parts (engine and tranny) that I could add to the stockpile, if it's gas, not so much. Doesn't look like much in the way of decent body parts, looks like this has had a cheap bondo and paint job to cover up rust.
The missing hub also makes me wonder that there are issues with the front axle, either that or someone clipped something and smashed it off? Either way some closer inspection will be required there.
Good call on the semi floating rear axle, I'd missed that part. Everything I have here now have sterling rears, is there anything they share even for brake hardware or anything?
That semi-floater is likely a Sterling actually, I see tons of those in junkyard F250s, all gassers tho. It's a lighter-duty axle, don't know about brake parts tho... Considering this axle, and also the fact it's a reg-cab truck, I'd suspect the front axle is a D44, and not the heavier-duty D50.
Is the guts of the semi floaters interchangeable with the full floating axles? Just wondering if there would be anything I could use out of it at all.....
From what I've seen the center section looks identical between full-floaters and semi-floaters, which means that at least theoretically the differential, its bearings, and the gears should interchange. Why are you so hell-bent on getting this truck tho, even a whole rear end is not much of an incentive to buy a complete truck...
Not hell bent on it at all, just curious IF I get it what I can use. But, like everything in life, the price has to be right. If I find it's a gasser with a 44, I'll walk away. If it's diesel with a 60, i'll be doing serious talking... something in between, it's hard to say.
Fortunately it's only a few miles from a half ton I'm going to look at tomorrow with a possible box and cab that I may grab to swap onto one of the trucks here. The one F350 here has a great drivetrain and plow, but the body is toast. The original plan was to canabalize it for the others, which would include swapping engines, front axles, and moving a plow over, now I'm thinking of doing a body swap instead, which could give me three trucks to setup for plowing instead of the original plan for two.
another possibility is....... its a 1991, 1st year sold was 1992 (sat on the lot) and they just went by that year. bet the door manufacturer date is 90.
In any event, it's been interesting to see the process of everyone figuring it out for what it really is. They haven't emailed back, if I can figure out where it is in relation to the tin I'm going to look at, I would still like to stop, if nothing else, to grab some pics and see how accurate everyone's thinking is.
