I just got my truck back from the shop for an oil leak fix. They replaced the front seal that was leaking pretty bad which is what I suspected.
He (the mechanic) said the old seal was in bad shape once he got to it. So he replaced the seal. Got it back yesterday and put 20 or so miles on it and it's still leaking! Almost as bad as it was before I took it in.
Drove it today for another 30-40 miles. It's still leaking but not nearly as bad as yesterday. Much less oil to my surprise.
So what's the deal here? Is there something else that could have or maybe should have been replaced if the front seal was in bad shape? Why is it leaking a lot less today than yesterday?
Maybe the seal was nicked during the installation?
The harmonic damper may have a groove worn into the sealing surface. A speedy-sleeve will fix it but IDK if there is one available for our truck. A new aftermarket damper is $60-100.
BTW: Our OEM rear main seal comes with a wear sleeve. (speedi sleeve)
