79 Bronco not starting
Hey guys. I'm posting this for a friend. Frank drives a 79 Bronco that he bought after we got home from deployment. One day it just stopped starting and he's explained the problem to me. As I understand it, he turns the key and hears the fuel pump pressurizing. He then attempts to start it and it simply clicks. On the second attempt, there isn't even a click. I don't know if on the second attempt the fuel pump still pressurizes, but he was very clear that after one attempt there is just nothing when he turns the key. I'm going to check it out today after work so I'll have a better idea of the symptoms to post, but as of right now, I just don't know. My first opinion is that the starter relay is no good. I've also been told that maybe the starter solenoid might be the issue but I don't know anything about that part. Do any of you have any ideas as to what it might be? Better yet, are there any tests I can run to help diagnose? As far as I know his battery is good and his truck isn't throwing any codes. Like I said, I'll find out tonight. Thanks!

You sure its a '79 and not '89, as I remember the 79's do not have electric fuel pump (unless one was installed) and there was no computer to retrieve codes from. These trucks of the 70's were still fairly simple.

If it is a 79 and relatively stock, it is carburated. Depending on his age and if he hasn't driven a carbed engine before he needs to pump the accelorator a couple of times and hold it down about a 1/4 to start. My 30 something son in law had a hard time starting his Scout when he first got it because he had always driven a fuel injected vehicle that doesn't need to have the accelorator pumped. Consequently he didn't know you have to give the carb that initial pump.
Also, are the battery connections clean and is the battery OK with a good charge. Another possibility is that the ignition switch or the solenoid are going south. All this would be possible with a 79.
