I have an opportunity to buy a 2002 Explorer with a bad 4.6 V8 motor. Can anyone tell me which if any 4.6 (i.e. F150 / Crown Vic etc) will work as a doner motor? The original motor is still intact and running so I would have the intake, exhaust and all other parts to transfer over if required.
Ran low on or stopped pumping oil so Im told... Still runs but doesnt sound good. Owner said there was metal particles in oil when they drained it.
Found a low mileage 4.6 from a 2005 Explorer, dont want to commit to buying it till I know for sure it will work in the 2002.
Can you tell me if 2002 and 2005 4.6 Explorer application motors were the same or at least interchangeable?
I have an 02 explorer...ran low on oil...it's a 4.6 v8, my husband rebuilt the engine, berrings were trashed. Had a very hard time getting new ones because of the motor. In 02 they switched the engine components..you have to look at the vin if it's a "u" then should be pretty easy to find parts if its a "w" like mine...good luck!...anyway, something happened and it destroyed the head. So, out the motor came again. Referb head, installed it and ran great for 2 weeks. The spring that came on the head broke, and dropped a valve and trashed the block now...So, I'm looking for a 4.6 engine to put in it...Hope you have better luck than me...keep us posted!
- A very sad explorer owner!!!
I didnt end up buying the truck. The owner got a second estimate to put a used motor in it that was a lot less than the first estimate and opted to keep the truck.
sorry you didn't get to buy the truck...they really are a great vehicle..I miss mine very much having 2 kids. I have resorted back to my mustang, and it get a little cramped on trips..lol..
Thanks, I havnt given up on the Explorer hunt yet... I went to look at 1 last week, it was well maintained, drove well, no rattles or squeeks but it had a bit of a growl or humming noise from the driveline under acceleration so it scared me away.
