Oil pump help.

I have a 1976 Ford F100 with a 360 engine. I have recently
rebuilt it. I used a aftermarket Hi-Volume oil pump. Been running
for about a year.
When I get on the throttle a little the drivetrain starts making
some noises (Lifters, etc.) Almost like the lifters, etc. are running
dry of oil? If I run about 6 quarts of oil I don't notice this as much.
I was wondering if I need to go back with a stock oil pump? Or maybe need to make some oil modifications. Maybe the pump is pulling to much oil?

I have one lifter making quite a bit of noise and I am going to
have to pull the top off the motor and fix. Is there a chance that
this lifter is not getting enough oil to stay pumped up or maybe
just a bad lifter. It is a brand new crane with a dual pattern cam.

I have read quite a bit about the oiling problems of the FE series
motors. Didn't know this when I rebuilt my engine. Is there any modifications that I can or need to make when I pull the oil pan
off and top end? Or Should I even bother?

Thanks for any help. Duane in VA.

Oil pump help.

Consider a leaking exhaust system. Use a rubber garden hose, about 3 feet long, place one end near the manifold and the other on your ear and listen for a leak. Next, If this noise appears under load, it may be fuel detonation (VERY BAD), this can be resolved by running the engine fast idle and pouring a gallon of water down the carburetor. Pour slowly and don't stall the engine. The water trick removes carbon deposits that cause fuel detonation. Change the engine oil and filter after this water deal. If the problem is fuel detonation you can help the situation by retarding the timing a bit, running bigger main jets (richer fuel mix) or switching to higher octane fuel. Some times fuel additives are necessary. Since you ran this engine for a year with no problem I suspect fuel detonation. Or valve train issues. Not a oil pump problem. Eliminate the usual culprits and post back. Valve train issues can be resolved by flushing the engine and chainging the oil. Try that next after the water deal I told you about. If you have nonadjustable rocker arms, consider buying adjustables or find the lifter that is clicking and install a longer pushrod. You can get some of the lifters out for inspection without pulling the intake, not all just some, maybe you will get lucky. Do a search "oiling mods for FE top oilers" Has info on restricting oil to the heads.
