Has anyone had any experience with the Helix Power Tower? This device sits between the throttle body and the manifold and is supposed to improve power by 20hp and mileage by up to 6mpg. I get leery of the claims these characters make in hawking their products. I'll pay the price, just don't want to get stuck without the benefit. Thanks.
Many of the sites that sell the Helix Power Tower state that the whistle is normal, but I would like to know if there are any real improvements. It seems that you should be able to feel an increase of 20hp. Maybe Four Wheeler or some other mag will do a test.
I have ready MANY articles about throttle body spacers, including the Helix Power Tower. ALL of them say the same things:
-noticed increase in low end torque
-bad wistle
-no increase in fuel economy or HP
-makes a nice paper weight (have seen this one many times)
Instead of throwing away the money on something that everyone says doesn't work, get a K&N air filter and then an open air box mod.
It's basically the same as if you payed the $225 for the K&N, AirRaid, or Airforce 1 FIPK. There may be a slight difference but you won't see $175 difference.
Man Brandon, you're over here selling that idea, too. You getting a commission or something? Have you done it to yours yet? Set up your gallery and let's take a look.
No relation, commission, etc. It's just cheap and it works (I have done it to mine). I'm all about saving a little money. Just trying to pass on the good word. I will try and get my gallery setup in the next couple of days.
The great thing is that it takes very little time and you can easily go back to stock should you need to for any reason.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Jan-02 AT 03:37 PM (EST)]Yeah, they can work but with other modifications.
No sense in improving the intake unless you improve the exhaust and no sense in improving either if you can't adjust fuel and timing. So, if you want more power, that you can really feel, get a cold air intake (a real one), a new MAS, freer flowing exhaust (headers, free flow cat and muffler), a chip and watch all your well spent money give you an improvement at 4000RPM.
Listen, go for the supercharger. Just buy one, I'll put it on my truck for you to let you know how good it is. When my truck wears out, I'll return it.
Appears that the Helix, like most other claims by hawkers, is full of crap. When I find stuff like this I tell the retailers that they need to get rid of it. Why push something on me that doesn't? It creates a bad name. I did put an MSD ignition on my '92 Big Bronco XLT. Ran smoother, spun up a littler faster, but nothing exciting. I was thinking of the Helix for my Expy. Thanks, for all your input.
I installed the Helix on my wife's '01 Expo EB and I did notice some increase in the low end torque... there was a persistent, non-stop annoying noise coming from the passenger seat immediately after installation... my wife complained non-stop until I removed it due to the whistle that sounded like fingernails on a chaulk board... since removing the Helix, the whistle is gone but I still have that annoying noise from the passenger seat...
I have a 98 expy with the 4.6 and the first mod I did was add a throttle body spacer.I did notice a slight increase in torque between 1k and 2k rpm.I dont know about MPG because I didnt calculate it before the change.I think the whistle sounds pretty cool.I even though I had leaks until I came to this forum. The spacer I bought was from Summit Racing for only $60.Its made by Trick Flow I think.I doesnt have those swirls that the more expensive ones have.
