I am looking for cam and carb size recommendations for a 410.

I have a 410 in my 69 F100 4WD. It has the following:
  • Intake is a C6AE 9425-G (it also has 6F29 cast on the front of the intake, but I know with Fords you can lose your mind trying to figure out all the casting marks).
  • Heads are C7AE-A
  • Carb is an Edelbrock 600
It has headers, and the heads were ported and polished, and the intake was port matched to the heads. It has an RV cam, and it runs out of steam at around 3,000 RPM (sorry don't have the specs on the cam available).

I am looking for more mid and upper range performance. The truck has been very nicely restored and I am going more in the hot rod direction. It is a nice weather driver and not a working truck, so I am looking for reasonable drivability but with a decided preference for performance, including some lope at the idle. I am not too price sensitive as I have spent lots on her so far.

Looking for suggestions on cam type (roller?) and specifics (vendor, duration and rise), and what to expect/do about the vacuum. In fact, for those who have used more extreme cams, how do you deal with vacuum advance on the timing? Last, how much carb is enough?

I am happy to waste money on gas, tires, and cam and carb.

Thanks for letting me borrow your experience.

For starters, I would have the timing curve checked out, and see if for some reason your secondaries are not opening up. Even a stock cam in a stock engine should pull past 4000. Something ain't right. draggin' the line

I was recommended the Speed Demon 650cfm (Demon carbs flow more than their rating) for my healthy-built 390FE (shooting for ~450ish HP) in my 69 F100 build. It may give up 5-10hp (compared to a 750cfm) on the extreme top end, but it will gain it at lower RPMs where the motor spends most of it's life. Given the weight of the truck, this is a wise trade-off to maximize useable power.

Thanks for the suggestion about checking that the secondaries are opening, however I didn't mean it won't pull at all, it is just unimpressive and only marginally better than the 360 was.

I found the numbers for the current cam:
Lift .484-.510
Duration 270-280
Duration at .050 204-212

I'll investigate the Speed Demon carb.

Anyone else want to chime in?

hey paul if you still have that edlebrock on there it will be a mechanical secondary.. I don't think a giant carb will be the answer I think a bit more cam will give you more than you think.
