.. I have been wondering the same thing....I am going down to the Outer Banks the end of July, been comtemplating whether to bring a second vehicle for the beach instead of the Tahoe which is my camper tow rig, thought of the Escape, but I may bring my old Bronco, IF I see an Escape stuck I come pull you out...only kidding... I hear they do well but I have not tried mine yet, just can't bring myself to take it to the surf yet, hope you have no problems ...I will be watching to see how you do... when I was down there several years ago w/ my ford supercab I found that the beach was a harder pack sand than the Jersey beach sand

I will let you know...or maybe you will be towing me out...hopefully not. I am pretty sure it will be fine the only other thing that concerns me is the piece of hard plastic on the lower front bumper (on most newer models). If I got stuck in some thick stuff that would pull the whole front off...wondering if it can be removed.

Have Driven Hatteras Many Times in Escape
Schim21, I am here to tell you first hand that the Escape does a fantastic job in the Outer Banks! I have driven mine on nearly ever ramp up and down miles of shore line on Hatteras Island. Moreover, my wife and I prefer the sand and beach of Okracoke island. Growing up we always knew that this was softer deeper sand. The Escape did fine. Now because of clearance issues stay in the tracks formed by other vehicles and dont stop. But I have never been stuck. Even when parking after crossing tracks....no worries. As much as I love big trucks (which as I'm sure you know there is no shortage of on the Island) I kind of laugh thinking that my little stock Escape is doing the same job. I will be there July 17th-23rd, I have a blue 01 with what will probably have a blue Honda CRV in tow. Maybe I'll see you down there. Anyways enjoy!

Beach Driving
We drive on the beach all the time at the Outer banks... The problem with the escape is its low to the ground. just watch for deep ruts. if you air down like people are saying you should be ok. some places have some soft spots you might want to avoid. just dont drive like a bat out of H#@$ that will just get you a speeding ticket.. and you now have to have a permit if you drive on the beach from Oregon Inlet south to Ocracoke... The locals are trying to put a stop to this because its killing the economy. so be aware of that!
