Power steering upgrade

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but here it is again. My 94 had the normal noisy pump, and when using 4 wheel drive, it would spit fluid out. So I ordered a Cardone(sp?) #20-6244. I also grabbed a pressure line off a 85 pickup. The pump was all bolt on, the belt even fits still. Just had to bend part of the hard line on the pressure lin. Now there is no pump wine, and it turns even easier than before. I also have this same pump on my 78. Has worked great on that, so figured I'd use one on my 94 too.

Are you aware of a version of those pumps that has two return lines? You now, for running hydroboost

No, I don't know of one, but, you could nab a "can" off a Chevy pump that has two return lines and use that on this pump. Or I'm sure you could very easily add a return line to this one.

hydra-boost is a hydraulic brake booster that gets its boosting capabilities from the powers steering pump

Hydroboost uses your powersteering for pressure for a brake booster instead of a vac can

well... it has its highs and lows... if u have a p/s pump leak and fluid runs low it sucks brakes get hard and the pump screams every time u brake.... but it is heavier duty than vacuum boosted

Yep, people have done it. A variety of diesel pickups have it on them.

That's what I was thinking, I wanna run an extra-capacity tank anyways so the Chev setup will be a good way to go about it.

You actually don't wanna do that, as if you steer and brake fast at the same time you can dead-head the steering or the brakes (depending on how you have the T-ee plumbed in) and kill its power assist - it's not common, but it happens, I've done it with my old Chev that I hydroboosted without using the expansion can mentioned by hav24wheel.

It's been done quite a few times, you can use factory Ford parts from/for an F-Superduty truck, or you can even adapt hydroboost units from other makes (like for instance how I have one from a 3/4-ton Suburban). Do a search, you'll find tons of information on the subject.

Well depends on what pump (or actually reservoir) you have now - I run hydro-specific reservoir so I have a return port on top of it before the fill neck, for me adding the extra tank would be as simple as running a line off that port to the new tank and also plugging the vent hole in the factory cap so fluid don't overflow from there. In your case with a factory single-return port I'd redo return line from the steering box entirely and run it to the add-on tank first, and then run another line from the tank down to the factory return port on the bottom of the PS pump. Really the whole idea of the extra tank is to circulate more fluid through the system which allows for more cooling, in case of the hydroboost you already have the extra circuit through the brake booster so you can have that run through the add-on tank and leave the steering lines as is, but with just a steering circuit you wanna move the line to the add-on tank.
