The MN winters (_amn salt on the roads) are on hard on the pickup boxes. Does anyone out there know where I can get a rust free or mostly rust free box for a 96 (shortbox) with dual gas tank doors? I really like this truck and have had Fords for years. I have to do the cab corners on the truck anyway so will have to remove the old box. Could use some decent reasonable advice on this issue. It is hard to find any connections out of state when it comes to finding salvage parts.
You say you are redoing cab corners anyway, since you do not appear to be intimidated by a little bodywork why not also redo the box? Replacement partial & full panels are available for the job.
I have replaced box sides before on a great 1984 4x4 that I had, but on this particular truck there are problems with the wheel arch supports. That, of course, is the piece which causes all the problems in the first place. It is rusted out. There would little if any place to weld the new arch pieces on the bottom plus I haven't been able to find replacement either new or used for those wheel arch supports. Do they make replacement pieces? Also time is an issue as well. Like everyone else these days it seems like time is always an issue.
