Last couple of weeks my truck has started to pull to the right. Took it to my mechanic since I can't do alignments and my outer tie rods are bad. I am thinking of replacing all the components so that they don't go bad a few weeks later. My question is, is this a do able job for an average joe, with limited tools or should I just have my mechanic do it. Any help would be appreciated. If it is do able does anyone have a write up on this? Thanks in advance.
Jody, this is a job you can do yourself, But you will need an alignment afterwords.
The tie rods are held in with a nut and a tapered seat machined into their respective home. If they are the original tie rods you may need a puller to get the taper to pop,or you may get lucky. If no puller you can loosen the nut almost all the way off then BFH to pop the taper. Don't forget to go to the hardware store and get some new cotter pins. Replacing every tie rod end on your truck should be about 240 just for OEM parts. OEM tie rods do not come painted.
Jody, just like walt said it a really easy job. Autozoo has the fork for loan to pop them off if the old ones are stubborn. Get an alignment and your good to go!!

Walt is there anything special to this. Can I just take the old one on and put the new one on with out having to do anything else, or do I need to measure the tie rods before switching them out. Never done tie rods before. lol
I would stay away from these. Last fall I had ordered the inner tie rod from them(World of Suspension) and this past Memorial Day, the tapered shaft snapped and I had no steering. Thank god I was way up northern Maine when it happened. I would hate to be playing bumper cars in heavy traffic. I was very luck, a local parts store had the Moog part in stock with a lifetime warranty.
I'd take some measurements of the old ones first. that will get you close for running true with your alignment. I took measurements and when I took it in for alignment, the guy said it was bang on. I got lucky I guess.
