I am looking at a Ford Ranger and I found one that is local. I was wondering if you guys could help me out and tell me if this is worth what I am paying for. The seller is asking 5,000. It is first owner, 2000 Ford Ranger with the Extended Cab. It comes with a bed top and studded snow tires. It only has 80,000 miles on it and it is getting an oil change and a tune up before I would get it. Do you think this is worth it? Why or Why not?

with what you told us so far and assuming it is 2wd. i would say the price is to high. what motor? auto? 5 speed? is it in perfect shape? what area of the country has the truck been in? AC? are you buying direct from the owner?
It is V6, Flex Fuel, 3.0 Litre, Comes with AC. It is in perfect shape just used to travel to work in Windsor Locks Ct from Windsor Locks Ct. It is 2ws. It is automatic. I am buying directly from the person and it is a friend but i just wanted to get second opinions.
Assuming that the mileage is correct, the ranger in question has gone less than half the miles of it's lifetime. A new ranger costs 20,000, half of that is 10,000 so you're getting half the value of the new ranger for a quarter of the price of a new ranger.

You are paying close to Dealer retail. if you are going to buy it for 5k with no warranty. I would propose a win/win scenario where you ring it to a mechanic and have him go thru it. maybe split the cost with the owner. that way he is not selling you a lemon and your friendship will not be compromised if something goes wrong. You might .
The reference dept of your local library should have a NADA or KElly Blue Book for used truck vales. You need to know options on truck and mileage and the book gives you trade in and retail values.

Edmunds, nada and kbb are all online for free.
this is who I think uses what
Edmunds=buyers= most accurate
NADA= government= in the middle
KBB= dealers and sellers= over inflated/deflated prices especially between the trade in price and Dealer price. ie . a car that has a tradin off about 5,000 will have a Certified dealer of about $10,000
As A rule I never pay more than Edmunds, good condition, tradin. I buy about 10 cars a year. I am not a dealer.
I just looked up a 2003 Ranger xlt, 2.3, auto Ac 100k miles
edmunds excellant condition, $4300 trade in, $6,000 Retail
KBB excellant condition, $3,000 trade in, $6,800 retail
KBB is a tool for the dealers. Dont ever use that as a buyer.
edmunds is the most realistic. You should never have to pay more than good condition edmunds trade in. The only reason you would is because you want such a specific vehicle that there are not many of them and when you find you have to pay what the seller is asking.
if you are looking for a general Ranger. You can find them all day long on CL for a fair price. Last week I looked at a 2006, 2wd,auto, 3.0, 100k I could have had it for $2800 I did not take it. but it sold 5 minutes after i left.....
I just saw this truck on CL I called the guy. He is legitamate. seemd like a nice guy. He said he will take 5k for the truck. I looked it up on edmunds excellant condition tradin 6k good condition trade in $5300. This seems like a win/win deal please let me know what any of you think! 2001 FORD RANGER XLT 4WD ONLY 80k MILES RUNS AWESOME!
I'd have to agree with everything powersmoked has said. He's given you incredibly strong advice. 5k for an auto 2wd Ranger with no warranty and from a private seller is a little stiff. If it is a good truck then it is a good truck and that can't be argued but it's totally possible to find great deals on good trucks. With the snow tires on it you have to assume it has been driven in cold weather and that would imply ice as well and ice brings sand and salt. Get under that thing and check it out for excess rust, corrosion, and abrasion. The 3.0 is a spectacular engine but there are still better deals to be found. And you can't base it off of expected lifetime of every Ranger and initial price. Immediately upon driving it off of the lot the value depreciates substantially for no reason. Also, any vehicle cared for properly can easily reach 160k miles and beyond but not cared for especially driven in a hostile environment 80k could be close to the breaking point where the repairs to come will eat your checkbook. Make an informed purchase like it seems you are doing and wait for that good deal because they are out there but it may not be right when you want it.
