Newbie here so please take it easy. I recently purchased a 79 F-100 with a 300 I6 and automatic. It's the first Ford I've ever owned and I'm closing in on 45YO. Purchased figuring I could fix most anything since no computer, EFI, etc. Anyway, found number 1 cylinder not firing. Been told engine rebuild likely required. Haynes manual states that it should have a C4 transmission and that a 302 V8 should bolt right up. Is this true and how do I verify that the C4 is indeed in there? I know its not the original engine. Thank you.
Now keep in mind I don't know any history on the truck, but just because the cylinder isn't firing doesn't mean the engine is shot. If it's not firing on that cylinder, check the distributor cap, wire and spark plug for that cyliinder. I'd run a compression test on the engine to determine it's overall condition before doing anything else.
Wether or not the 6 cyl bellhousing is the same as the 302 belhousing, I don't know. Someone else may chime in here a little later and answer that for you.
Thanks for the info and the link. Changed out cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. Pulled wire off of No1 plug, placed it against the head while running, and heard arcing so I know its getting spark. Likely compression is the issue which would require a rebuild I think. Thanks again.

compression test will tell you that. just my opinion but between the 300 and 302, i would just rebuild the 300. better motor in my opinion
