U-joint replacement
Hey, how hard is it to replace the U-joint at the differential side of the shaft on an 04 FX4? Any special tools needed? At low speed (5-10mph) sounds like someone tapping on the rear end with a ball peen hammer, I guess it is the u-joints. Any suggestions?

Honestly, I haven't needed to look at mine yet. They were easy to replace on my wife's Explorer. I think I needed a small C-clamp for forcing out the old ones. Other than that, just be sure to mark the bolt up points so you put everything back together in the same position-to prevent possible shaft balancing issues.

The tapping noise at low speeds was the parking brake shoes. The pads separated from the metal and was rotating around inside the parking brake drum. FYI in case someone else has that irritating noise coming from the rear.
