NP 435 clearances

I am considering this swap since I have all of the right parts sitting around. My concerns are the clearances from floor to dash. How far should I expect the tranny to stick out above the floor? Do you need to bend the shifter a bunch not to hit the dash? I was planning to install an under dash A/C like from 65-66 Mustangs or a similar dealer add-on used in the late 60's. But I dont want to find out after I cut out the floor that it doesnt work. Anybody gone this direction or have some possible insight. thanks

There are a couple of different 435 towers available. A short and a tall tower. Both will fit, but the short tower will give you some extra room. The shifter comes out right under the heater floor venting.

For bending the shifter, I make the original bottom bend straight, and then measure up about 1 1/2" from the top of the pivot ball that goes into the tower. Make sure the spring is on it, that will help with the location. Bend it 90 deg straight back.
I then twist the bend so that the shifter aims for the passenger side. Depending on what the shifter came out of, there can be several variations on the other bends. From the first bend I make, I will go up and bend it back towards the center of the Bronco and up a little bit. I try to make the **** end up just about even with where it comes out of the tower. Its hard to explain in words.
Once you have it in your hand, it's easier to understand.

This will get it installed into the Bronco around the transfer case shifter. At that point, you can fine tune it to where it feels comfortable and shifts easily.

As far as fitting A/C, I've never seen a 4 speed with underdash air. I'm sure it could be done. My opinion is that the shifter is going to be bent at such an angle, that it will be hard to shift and find gears. I definetely don't think you could do it with a vintage 60's add on A/C unit. They are pretty big. Your best bet would be a new system like the one that Vintage Air or some of the other hot rod suppliers out there. They have much more compact underdash units that use the latest technology. I have a 2" body lift with the tall tower on mine. If you want some pictures of the dash clearance, let me know. I can put them on my truck photos page

I'm going to be putting in a A/C system in a Bronco with the NV4500 5 speed pretty soon. The shifter comes out of that transmission a little farther back, so I think its doable. At least thats what I'm hoping.
