I just purchased a 2001 Excursion with a 7.3 Power Stroke Diesel it has 230,000 miles on. Seems to be in great shape compaired to others I looked at with much lower miles. Since getting it I have changed the fuel filter had the transmission flushed and just a general go over. I hope to have this vehicle for a long time so am looking for suggestions of things to change, check or do to the engine to prolong its life. Any ideas appreciated!!
Change the oil along with the other fluid changes.
One thing to check on your '01, assuming it's an auto being an Excursion; if the tranny has the bad diode or if it's been fixed.
A few simple things to do is pull the valve covers and re-torque the injector hold down bolts and rocker arm bolts. Also check the UVCH (under valve cover harness) connections and do the 50 cent mod. There seems to be a lot of people with issues related to them lately.
Pull off the IC boots, clean them up and check for any splits or cracks. Make sure you get them tightened down well when putting them back on. You don't want one blowing off under heavy loads when particular other vehicles think they are faster than you...
Like the guys said, fluids, fluids, fluids. If you haven't done an oil change yet, doing a used oil anyalis on you motor oil will tell you everything thats going on in your motor. Let it drain a bit then place the container to collect a sample then send off to Blackstone. These guys are sponsors here and they do a good job, check it out. Blackstone Labs
