Please explain your opinion of why Studebakers were crappy.

Tread lightly kiddo...you better know what the heck you're talkin' about, because...

Not only have I owned 30 Studebakers from 1923 thru 1964, but before I was a Ford partsman...I was a Studebaker partsman...I kid you not.

F&M: This emblem on the side of the car was only used with V8's. The I-6's used a gold anodized circled S.

well, as I have not owned one yet I guess I can not say that, I was basing it off of many stories I've heard, actually, I don't think I've ever talked to someone who owned one who didn't have something bad to say about the cars.
The talk I hear about studebakers is kinda the way people talked about daewoo kia and hyundai in the 90s.
The story that sticks out the most in my mind is a guy I know had a 65 i believe lark, with his wife in the passenger seat and his mother in the back seat, and while driving the seat broke and he ended up in his mother's lap! i laugh at that story a lot, haha

but btw Bill, I wonder if you had one of these, my all time favorite studie and one of my favorite cars altogether is a 36 president

and on a side note my favorite truck of all time is a ford, and not a 56(I actually hate that body style!) a 34 Ford is my favorite, and there's a guy out here where I live who has an almost rust free one just sitting, My dad's tried to get it from him but he's a cranky old b*****d.

You wanna know why the seat broke? This was once a common occurence. The same thing happened with Studebaker, Ford and all other vehicles with reclining seats.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the same thing still occurs today.

Drivers would sit in the cars, then reach into their pants pockets to get the keys. Sooner or later...the force caused by leanin' back in the seat, caused the gear that controls the reclining mechanism to strip.

When the gear stripped, the seat fell backwards.

As far as people bad mouthing Studebaker...they do this with all vehicles. Wanna see some examples? Read all the complaints right here on FTE about the new stuff.

And...most ppl that complain about old rolling piles of misery didn't buy them new. These vehicles have had multiple owners. Usually when the third, fourth and etc owners bought them, they spent very little money on maintenance.

My Rambler American had those reclining seats. The screw for the handle on the passenger side would back out and the seat back would fall with no warning. As a teenage boy this was a huge plus on date nights.
By the by, first car I ever owned was a '61 or 2 Lark VII. I paid $50 for the thing and drove it a year before the tranny blew and it was sold for parts...for $150. Wasn't pretty, but was a damn good car.

Late 1930's thru 1950's Nash front seats could be folded down flat to make a bed. The back seats backrest could be swung up oughtta the way.

While this was a handy-dandy item for people that liked to camp out, worried parents used to look at their daughter's boyfriend's cars to see if it was a Nash.

Your Lark was either VI (I-6) or a VIII (V8). 1956/66 Studebakers came with the Flash-O-Matic A/T, this was Studebakers name for Ford-O-Matic.

All 1941/66 Studebaker passenger cars, 1/2 ton trucks used Dana 44 rear axles.

I particularly liked how the second "66 F-100" brochure used a computer to prove how good they are...
