Angry wireing prob

hello everyone
I have recently tried to hook up a trailer brake controller to my 1997 for f-150, I bought the wiring harness from my local ford dealer.(the harness that connects the controller to the truck)
But to my supprise there is a extra wire (brown) in the harness labeled elumination, and the only place I can figure that it hooks up to is the blue (brake) wire. No other place that I hook it up to will make the LED on the controller come on. Now here's the prob., when I hook the brown (elumination) wire up to the blue(brake) wire, and then step on the brake pedel the dash lights blink on/off the a few seconds later they blink on/off again.
Anyone heard of this prob. before.
stats
F-150 W/tow pckg.(installed from factory)
Tekonsha Voyager brake controller
wiring harnness w/ 5 wires
brown(illumination) white(ground) red(feed from bat) blue(brakes) green(stop lamp)

on controller
white(ground) blue(brakes) black(+ poss) red (stop)

The illumination circuit should be a LB/R wire going to all the dash illumination bulbs, like the cluster connectors and the radio. That's the circuit that gets dimmed by turning the headlight ****.

I believe you have your wires connected incorrectly. The blue wire from the controller should be the output going to your trailer brakes. The wire in the dash labeled "illumination" should be supplying power to any aftermarket device that needs a light source, like add on gauges. Steve83 is correct saying the "illumination" wires output voltage is varied by the rheostat on the dash. I installed a Drawrite controller on the wife's 99 F-150, and on my 00 F-250. I did not use the "illumination" wire in either case. The color code you have listed at the end of your post is correct, but don't connect any thing to the "illumination" wire in the dash. On my DrawTite controllers you will get a demical point ". " illumination when you depress the brake pedal. You will not get a digital readout on the controller unless you have a trailer connected to the truck. I'm not famaliar with the Tekonsha controllers.

Thanks for the help guys
You all were right, the illumination wire does not get hooked up to the controller.
My prob was I had a bad 7to6 connecter
But I now have a new one and after makeing the correct changes in the adaptor all works fine.

I think the "illumination" wire is because some break controllers have extra lights to see controlls and the such at night. I don't have experience with it but it seems like I read somewhere that the Prodigy controller used it. Maybe that's just my assumption because of the fancy face display.
